NASA has finally answered a long-standing question: all but one of the six American flags on the Moon are still standing up. Everyone is now proudly talking about it. The only problem is that they aren't American flags anymore. They are all white. The debate on the Moon flags has been going on for decades. Engineers and historians have been discussing it without ever coming to a definitive answer as to their status. Even Dennis Lacarruba—the manufacturer of the flags—didn't think they would still be standing erect. Lacarruba's New Jersey company, Annin, made the nylon flags for $5.50 ($33 in 2012 dollars) a piece in 1969: I can't believe there would be anything left. I gotta be honest with you. Wet Hot American Summer is the classic teen movie scenario: everyone's trying to get a little action before the end of [insert memorable adolescent event] but they're all striking out. Naturally, hilarity ensues. The off-beat 2001 flick is a satire of all those familiar big screen situations, like unrequited love and awkward sexual encounters. Dorky guy likes hot girl but she's dating the popular, albeit unfaithful, jock—we all know how that story goes. Except it's at summer camp, that magical place where there are no parents and kids are for some reason entrusted into the unreliable care of college-aged folks who aren't much older—or much more responsible. Pioneering American astronaut Sally Ride died today after a battle with pancreatic cancer. She was 61. In 1983, she became the first American woman to travel to space. But that's not all. At 32 she was the youngest American to have travelled to space at all at that time. What an incredible life. Our condolences go out to her friends and family. Sally Kristen Ride was born in Encino, Los Angeles, California in 1951. She attended the prestigious Harvard-Westlake school on a scholarship, and graduated from Stanford University with degrees in English and Physics. As she was finishing her Ph.D in physics she saw an advertisement that said NASA was seeking astronauts. Ride applied for the job, and was amongst 35 new astronauts hired by NASA in 1978—six of them were women. After serving on the ground-based crew for several missions, Ride was tapped to go up into space herself. Until that point most astronauts were usually military pilots that were used to extremely dangerous situations. ...
