Students Build Super Desktop Slingshot for Playing Angry Birds [Video]

Image
Aug 9, 2012 10:30 PM   Hideaki Matsui and Andrew Spitz, students at the Copenhagen Institute of Interaction Design, built the Super Angry Birds desktop slingshot controller as project for their Haptic (tactile feedback) technology class. With a hacked motorized fader (the kind found in audio mixing consoles) to create forced feedback, an Arduino-based microcontroller called Music & Motors developed at the CIID, and a programming in Max/MSP and Arduino, the real-life bird-slinger mimics exactly the tension and toss of the wildly popular Rovio game. They even built a custom TNT box for the birds whose abilities are amplified in the game when triggered by such a device. About their force-feedback USB controlled, the pair writes: Basically, the way we achieved this is by drawing a force curve and storing the values in a table, then we send the current position of the slider through the table and extract the value to send to the motor that applies an opposing force. The final product ...

Conan Takes Super Slo-Mo to Absurd New Heights [Humor]

Image
Aug 1, 2012 1:00 PM   You know how the Olympics has all of this amazing, mind-boggling slow motion footage? Incredible, right? Conan O'Brien thought so, too. So he borrowed one of those cams to see if slo-mo can do for comedy what it's already done for sports. I'm going to go ahead and say, yes. It works. I mean who hasn't always wondered what a drunken Spiderman would look like puking, with his mask on, in slow motion? There are even more shots in the outtakes here. Good times. Jul 27, 2012 12:00 AM   You can bet your easel Bob Ross liked doing more than just painting "happy clouds." PBS Digital Studios teamed up with Symphony of Science's John D. Boswell (the same gent what remixed Mr. Rogers Neighborhood) for this delightful ditty. The Air Force's 30,000-Pound Super Duper Bomb Is Ready to Rock Iran [War]

Image
Jul 26, 2012 11:40 AM   They call it the Massive Ordnance Penetrator for a reason—and not because it's ready to star in a Pentagon porn flick. The MOP is massive, and designed to penetrate straight into someone's (Iran's) secret bunkers. Now it's ready. The GBU-57, the MOP's official designation, is a formidable piece of ordnance for the B-2 bomber: it's 20 feet long, 30,000 pounds, GPS-guided, and will drill straight through reinforced concrete before detonating 5,300 pounds of explosives. That should be enough to obliterate "hidden" underground nuclear facilities or weapon stockpiles—say, the kind our pals in Iran and Syria are skipping around in. The Air Force hopes stuffing an MOP down a bunker's gullet will be enough to destroy the whole complex—5,300 pounds is a lot of pounds—or, even better, deter foes from building these bunkers in the first place. The Pentagon hasn't said where it'll possibly use the bomb, because that much is ob...

Priorities USA Action, Barack Obama Super PAC, Raises $6.1 Million In June

WASHINGTON -- The top super PAC backing President Barack Obama's reelection campaign had its best month, raising $6.1 million in June. Priorities USA Action's fundraising came almost entirely from eight individuals giving six- or seven-figure donations. The biggest contribution was a $2 million donation from Qualcomm co-founder Irwin Jacobs. The other two million-dollar donors were Oscar winning actor Morgan Freeman and media magnate Fred Eychaner. Both gave $1 million. Architect Jon Stryker, an heir to the medical supply Stryker Corp. fortune, contributed $750,000. Stryker is a big donor to lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender causes, including to the Gay & Lesbian Victory Fund, which has itself given donations to super PACs this election cycle. The rush for money by Priorities USA Action staffers Bill Burton, a former top communications aide in the Obama White House, and Paul Begala, a former Clinton White House aide, was chronicled in an article for the New York Times Ma...
