What Should Microsoft Call Metro Now? [Chatroom]

Image
Aug 3, 2012 12:30 AM   Since we now know that Microsoft has yanked the (code)name Metro for its Windows 8 user interface, let's have a group think and figure out what Microsoft should rename its now-nameless UI. Every vote counts. Nothing's off the table. Except—maybe?—Blue Ivy. Microsoft: Metro Isn't Metro Anymore (Update: MS Responds) [Rumors]

Image
Aug 2, 2012 4:34 PM   Well this is going to be weird. After calling Microsoft's radically wonderful UI design "Metro" for a couple of years now, The Verge says Microsoft is ditching the name for legal reasons. So now what the hell do we say? According to a source "who wishes to remain anonymous," Microsoft is telling Metro developers to stop calling Metro things Metro, because Metro is already taken by some cranky German company called Metro. Metro? Metro! So do we need a new term for the common DNA between Windows 8, Windows Phone, Xbox, Outlook, and Office? Subway? Or, as is extremely likely, we'll all just go on calling it Metro, because German Metro can't sue us all at once. I am Spartacus. [The Verge] Update: A statement on the matter from a Microsoft spokesperson: "We have used Metro style as a code name during the product development cycle across many of our product lines. As we get closer to launch and transition from industry dialog to a...

What In the Hell Is Microsoft Trying to Do With Kinect? [Chatroom]

Image
Aug 2, 2012 8:00 PM   Apparently this Microsoft patent has something to do with using mobile devices with the Kinect system or using mobile devices with kinect built-in or creating a Holopac with your Kinect phone? I really don't know. If Microsoft made a tablet with Kinect controls, that would be really awesome for mobile gaming, but I'm pretty sure that's not what's happening here. Let's theorize and/or clarify here so that I feel like less of an idiot. Thanks and God bless. Microsoft Did the Impossible: The New Hotmail Is Fantastic [Video]

Image
No need to be kind here: telling people you use Hotmail has been the Internet equivalent of admitting to necrophilia. But after a decade as a punchline, Hotmail just pulled off the biggest victory in the inbox game since Gmail. And it might just get you to switch. This is starting to look familiar to the point of predictability. Microsoft takes something boring, partially broken, and thoroughly entrenched: Windows, Office, Mobile. Toss nearly everything ugly and uninspired into the ash heap, put smart people to work on it, and pack it full of Metro. Windows 8, Office 15, and Windows Phone have all turned stale things into vibrant, modern successes. And Hotmail—now Outlook—can boast the same. But, come on, is Hotmail capable of a makeover? Hotmail? Even the people who work on Hotmail will admit without reluctance that the name itself is one of the service's biggest liabilities. Nobody wants to say Hotmail. Nobody wants it on their resume, on their card, or shared over drinks. It...
