If You Want HBO Go, You'll Have to Keep Paying For Cable Forever and Ever [Streaming Video]

Image
A standalone HBO Go service is the holy grail for cordcutters. It means liberation from cable forever. It's never going to happen. Time Warner CEO Jeff Bewkes just told his investors in no uncertain terms that cordcutters don't exist, and that forcing people to pay for cable to get HBO will work. Sadly, he's probably right. According to Bewkes, the idea that people hate cable and can't wait to get rid of it is a myth. We'd like to think that everyone's content to just settle into a service like Netflix, but the numbers aren't there to support that theory. Check out this doozy of a quote from the Time Warner chief: But the whole idea that there's a lot of people out there that want to drop multichannel TV, and just have a Netflix or an HBO - that's not right. Look for the data, you won't find them. But won't Time Warner pretty please let us just subscribe to HBO Go alone? We don't care about getting the Food Network! We just want Game of ...

Bing's New Friend Tagging Feature Is So Cool You'll Wish It Wasn't On Bing [Bing]

Image
Jul 30, 2012 4:31 PM   If Google's angle is that it actually works really well, Bing's is that it's a "social search engine." And the latter's new Friend Tagging feature lives up to that promise, tapping the social network you actually use to aide your search results. With Friend Tagging, you can now tag your Facebook friends in any given Bing search, directing your query at them, in addition to just Bing. You do it in the Bing social bar, right on the page, which makes it a little more convenient than picking up a phone, or sending an email in the heat of the searching moment. Best of all, it means you don't have to rely solely on Bing for your answer. The feature could serve as a handy way to make sure your friends know you want their input, especially Internet friends who you might not be able to call or text. Granted, Google's also trying social search with its (awful) Google+ results, but Facebook integration could make for social search you mi...

You'll Never Want This Gorgeous Pizza Cutter To Touch Melted Cheese [Pizza]

Image
Jul 29, 2012 11:40 AM   On one hand there's no point in buying a gadget that's so lovely you'll be afraid to actually use it. But on the other hand, this pizza wheel from Rösle is absolutely gorgeous, and who on earth would want to ever muck up that polished finish by subjecting it to the greasy mess that is a pizza? Only monsters, that's who. Or people who don't have an appreciation for the art of kitchen accessory design. Because this wheel deserves a place on the wall at the MoMA. Or just hanging high above your kitchen counters where this $33 masterpiece can never be mucked up by food or greasy fingers. Insanely Detailed 1/6th Scale Figure Is the Closest You'll Get To Owning an Iron Man Suit [Toys]

Image
Jul 28, 2012 4:30 PM   You might not have the genius-level IQ and billions of dollars needed to build yourself a flying suit of armor like Tony Stark did. But with around $200 and a healthy imagination, Hot Toys' insanely detailed Iron Man Mark VII figure could fill that void in your heart. The company is well known for crafting remarkably detailed miniature versions of comic book heros, but its take on the Mark VII suit goes above and beyond the call of duty. It's covered in movable flaps, hidden weapons, and includes optional battle-damaged body panels. You can even swap in Robert Downey Jr.'s head, even though it might ruin the superhero fantasy of you being behind that mask. The Craziest Number You'll See About the Higgs Boson Discovery [Video]

Image
Jul 26, 2012 10:40 AM   So sure, the Higgs "discovery" wasn't really a discovery. More scientific fact checking, as our friends at MinutePhysics put it. But in the course of explaining all that, the number they dropped on our heads about confirming the existence of the Higgs statistically was mind-blowing: Statistical confirmation for the new particle required 600 million particle collisions—every second—for two years. Holy crap. ChargeCard Means You’ll Never Again Be Stranded With a Dead iPhone [VIDEO]

For all of us who have forgotten our chargers, here’s a great solution: ChargeCard, a rigid USB/iPhone charging cable that’s the size of a credit card. Just think, you’ll have it with you all the time, saving your bacon during those unfortunate occasions when your batteries run down to nothing. At a slim 2.54mm (0.1?) thin, this ABS plastic connector for iPhones is about the thickness of three credit cards, fitting in even an overstuffed wallet. So all you need is a hot USB port, and before too long, you and your iPhone will be back in business. ChargeCard is a Kickstarter project that’s already met its $50,000 goal with 35 days to go. But it’s not too late to get in on the action — a pledge of $18 or more gets you one of these ChargeCards in your choice of colors. Its creators, Noah Dentzel and Adam Miller, plan to retail this handy device in September for $25.
