New Device Turns Eye Movement Into Handwriting [Video]

Image
I always dreamed about being able to write or draw with no hands, using just my eyes. This new device invented by Dr. Jean Lorenceau at the Université Pierre et Marie Curie-Paris would allow me to do exactly that. Magic? Science! The system is already working. Lorenceau and his patients are using it to handwrite and draw on screens without moving a single muscle except those of their eyes. According to Lorenceau, this opens the door to expressive, very personal communication by people with disabilities, as described in the abstract of his paper, published in the July 26 issue of Current Biology: Here, I introduce a novel, temporally modulated visual display, which, although static, sustains smooth eye movements in arbitrary directions. After brief training, participants gain volitional control over smooth pursuit eye movements and can generate digits, letters, words, or drawings at will. For persons deprived of limb movement, this offers a fast, creative, and personal means of ling...

EarTop Flow Makes Almost Any Audio Device Wireless [VIDEO]

Finally, somebody figured out how to make any audio device wireless. Check out the EarTop Flow, a small Bluetooth device that plugs into the 3.5mm cable jack of just about any audio equipment. Pair it up, and suddenly, you’re wireless. The company is showing the EarTop Flow on a pair of Beats headphones at the moment, but it will work on home theater systems, your car if it has an auxiliary input, or any audio device with a 3.5mm input — in case you’re wondering, that’s pretty much the standard audio input on smartphones and other devices these days. Music and volume touch controls are built in, and there’s a couple of noise-canceling mics on board so you can use it with your phone, too. EarTop Flow is now available for preorder for $59.99. We didn't receive any details on what it could be, though this is most likely a US-bound device -- the email says "please join Samsung Electronics America for a major announcement and unveiling of the newest Galaxy device." With that tidbit in mind, we have a couple ideas: first, it may be the Galaxy S Blaze Q, since internal docs pin the phone's release on same exact day. With that being a T-Mobile exclusive for now, however, we're unsure that it'll be the recipient of so much pomp and circumstance. There's also a possibility that we'll see the Galaxy Note 10.1, which was announced at MWC in February and previewed in March. While we'd love to see the Galaxy Note 2, the odds of it being the mystery device are incredibly slim since the phablet...
