First Color 360-Degree Panorama Sent By Curiosity Rover Shows No Sailors Fighting In the Dance Hall [Image Cache]

Image
Aug 9, 2012 2:48 PM   Curiosity's day 3 on the Gale Crater, Mars. All systems are running as expected. There is no sign of sailors fighting in the dance hall, cavemen or any freaky show, and here's the first natural 360-degree color panorama image to prove it. It's a clear day on Mars. You can see Mount Sharp ahead of the rover, in the distance. That's the mission final destination, at the center of the Galer Crater. It shows some details from the rover itself: These is the end of the robotic arm. It's like a Swiss Army Knife, containing multiple instruments like the APXS (Alpha Particle X-ray Spectrometer) and MAHLI (Mars Hand Lens Imager). Here's the wheel of the rover. The marks of the sky crane's thrusters are clearly visible here. And here too. Here's the complete panorama—3653 x 755 pixels. Lenovo X1 Carbon: Holy Crap [First Impressions]

Image
Aug 10, 2012 2:00 PM   The Lenovo X1 Carbon arrived at our office a few days ago, and while the full review will be up early next week, we wanted to give you our first impressions of Lenovo's ruggedized ultrabook. So far: Really good. This is the best touchpad I've ever used on a Windows laptop. It's not quite perfect, but it's responsive, smooth, and works . And while some people still aren't sold on Lenovo's island keyboards, this is still one of the best keyboards you can use. Way better than the crap on Lenovo's U310, at least. There are some issues we're figuring out—it's been taking a long time to wake up compared to other ultrabooks, but we'll mess with some settings and see what happens—but this is a really, really exciting machine. It's light, it's tough, it looks and feels cool, and has most of the good stuff you associate with "business" laptops, and only some of the dumb stuff. Anyway, we're doing benchmarking ...

Curiosity Opens Her Eyes for the First Time (Updated With Panorama Images) [Curiosity]

Image
Great news keep coming from the red planet. Curiosity has opened her eyes for the first time. She took a good look around her and decided that life is good in Mars—albeit a bit lonely. Updated: New images coming in, including panoramas and high definition images from the descent. The Navigation Cameras—the eyes that will guide her around Mars—have been activated and they are beaming perfect images down to Earth. The left camera may have had a problem at the beginning, because at first the image was all dark and with a weird white artifact. It actually looked as if she had eyelids and was slowly waking up. This didn't happened with the right camera, which was sending perfect images from the moment it was turned on. I can imagine someone at mission control singing Oh You Pretty Things! in his or her head. "Wake up you sleepy head, put on some clothes, shake up your bed..." The first two images sent by the left Navcam—on the left—looked black and showed a weird artifact. T...

Everything You Need To Make Sure Your Kid Is the First Person On Mars [Toolkit]

Image
For the time being NASA is happy to send rovers and orbiters to study and explore Mars, but eventually the time will come when mankind is going to want to visit the red planet for ourselves. And there's a good chance the first human to set foot on Mars could be just an infant right now. So here's everything you'll need to prepare your own son or daughter to possibly be the first person on Mars one day. Because if there's one thing the Olympics are teaching us right now, it's that it's never too early to force your kids down the road to greatness. There's not much you can do to train your kids before they're actually able to walk and get around on their own. But you can start getting them comfortable with other worlds and far-away planets with these adorable Celestial Bodies plush toys. They come in four versions representing the Earth, the moon, the Sun, and most importantly, Mars. And they're a great way to prepare your child for what they might on...

RIP Sally Ride, the First American Woman In Space [Space]

Image
Pioneering American astronaut Sally Ride died today after a battle with pancreatic cancer. She was 61. In 1983, she became the first American woman to travel to space. But that's not all. At 32 she was the youngest American to have travelled to space at all at that time. What an incredible life. Our condolences go out to her friends and family. Sally Kristen Ride was born in Encino, Los Angeles, California in 1951. She attended the prestigious Harvard-Westlake school on a scholarship, and graduated from Stanford University with degrees in English and Physics. As she was finishing her Ph.D in physics she saw an advertisement that said NASA was seeking astronauts. Ride applied for the job, and was amongst 35 new astronauts hired by NASA in 1978—six of them were women. After serving on the ground-based crew for several missions, Ride was tapped to go up into space herself. Until that point most astronauts were usually military pilots that were used to extremely dangerous situations. ...

Google's First Nexus 7 Commercial Is Pretty Adorable [Video]

Image
Jul 23, 2012 6:58 AM   Google's Nexus 7 tablet is so popular that the 16GB model is sold out on the Google Play store. And that was without any commercials behind it. Here's the Nexus 7's first—about camping. Yes, the Nexus is Wi-Fi only, but hey, the video accounts for that, sort of. Or you could carry a hotspot, or tether, or whatever . What matters is this is adorable.
