Ditch That Old, Bulky Lamp for a Sleeker Piece of Lighting [Daily Desired]

Image
Aug 8, 2012 6:20 PM   Inspired by the shadows it casts, the Silhouette Lamp is unassuming and elegant. Turn it to its side, and you might mistake it for a coat rack because it's so slender. It uses an acrylic shade that doesn't look like a shade at all. Its unexpected design was actually intended for smaller homes where you might need a subtle ways to break the space up. And what a nice way to do so. Not available yet, but the designer, Wewood says it's coming soon. The Ultimate Can and Bottle Opener [Daily Desired]

Image
Aug 1, 2012 10:00 PM   Two things you always seem to need but that always seem to grow legs and scuttle away: can openers and bottle openers. This handy well-made tool from Kuhn Rikon combines both of those into one. Problem solved! This particular piece of kitchen/bar gear will remove your lids without you having to pry them off and risk cutting your fingers. Plus it comes from a Swedish company and we all know the Swedes do things well (see Ikea). Stylized Transit Maps Are a Lovely Way to Rep Your Favorite City [Daily Desired]

Image
Jul 30, 2012 5:40 PM   In New York, most of us strap-hangers have a love/hate relationship with the subway. It's either totally reliable or totally screwed. You're either right on time or squinting down the tunnel wondering where the train is. And you forget what a wonderful thing public transit can be. These awesome wordless maps from LinePosters have the power to remind you of that. With snaking lines and a simple clean two-toned design, they're an artful look at public transit in cities around the world, from Berlin to San Francisco. They're beautiful and hypnotizing—you might find yourself day dreaming of navigating the system in Tokyo, which looks totally confusing and also have everything written in Japanese. Or maybe you prefer the system in Barcelona, which spreads beautifully across the page. They're all gorgeous in their own ways, and each would definitely encounter some primo people watching. Why Settle for One Wrench When You Can Have Eight? [Daily Desired]

Image
Jul 26, 2012 7:00 PM   We all need a good wrench to keep around the house, but we don't necessarily need a whole toolbox full of them. In this case, the Craftsman Figure Eight Wrench might be the magic solution. Why? Because the $25 piece of metal is eight different sizes in one, starting at 1/4 all the way up to 3/4 inch. Plus both ends are compatible with a bunch of different styles of fasteners. So on a day when you're doing some work around the house, whether you're fixing the sink or doing maintenance on your bike, you won't be wasting time rummaging around for wrench after wrench. You've Got to Be Crafty to Take Down the Empire With this LEGO Star Wars Chess Set [Daily Desired]

Image
Jul 27, 2012 6:40 PM   This whole rebellion business could have been handled with much more savvy than just blowing up home planets and Deathstars. Both sides could have sat down to a friendly no-holds-barred, all-or-nothing chess match with the fate of the galaxy on the line like civilized people. This Star Wars: Return of the Jedi chess set from Lego-geneer Brandon Griffith. He began constructing the set—the final piece in a trilogy of Star Wars-themed chess sets—in late 2010 and recently debuted it during Star Wars Days at LegoLand California. This set pits the plucky rebels with an army of Ewok pawns against the full might of the Empire including Jabba, AT-ST's, and the Sith Lord himself, Vader. The Backpack That's Stylish Enough for the City, but Tough Enough for the Great Outdoors [Daily Desired]

Image
Jul 24, 2012 9:00 PM   You could go crazy with a backpack purchase—there are some giant models that would fit a military bunker's worth of stuff. But what if you need something substantial that's also appropriate for carting your laptop into the office each week? Uncrate has teamed up with Topo Designs for a lightweight day backpack ($89). If you suffer from that awful curse where you somehow lose things inside your bag, you'll like this one for its bright orange lining. It comes with a government-issue knife with a two and a half inch blade, and it's got moisture wicking straps, so your back won't be soaked in sweat whether you're commuting to work or hiking off in the wilderness. The Miniature Kitchen That's Impossible Not to Love [Daily Desired]

Image
Jul 23, 2012 6:40 PM   Maybe you have an apartment the size of a dollhouse. Or maybe you just like to keep everything out of view. Either way, Kitchoo's Compact Kitchens condense appliances and storage space together into very small, sleek packages. They start at around $4,700, and they hide fridges, sinks, cooking spaces, dishwashers, microwaves, and more into a little telescoping module. You might be thinking "hey, that sounds like an RV," but actually these wooden mini-kitchens are very smart looking, and an ingenius way to make a little bit of real estate go a long way.
