Apple's Latest Passbook Patent Is for Shopping [Patents]

Image
Aug 7, 2012 4:40 PM   Apple has landed some more intellectual property for Passbook, its mobile wallet solution for iOS 6. This time it's a patent directly related to shopping. The latest is an NFC-powered shopping app that lets you make a list by scanning product codes or taking pictures. It will also pull up information you'd want to know like price, quality, ratings, etc. Then when you make your decision, you could check out electronically. Sounds a little obvious, and it actually seems similar to the Apple Store app that already exists. Except this one would work at every store. But just like the travel patent Apple recently earned, we won't see it as a standalone product, but rather another portion of Passbook. That's not a bad thing, though. With so many capabilities rolled in one, Passbook could be absolutely killer. Assuming, you know, the next iPhone actually has NFC. Samsung Throws a Temper Tantrum in Court Battle Against Apple and Leaks Dismissed Evidence to the Press [Patent Wars]

Image
When a judge decides to dismiss evidence you feel would make your case in a patent lawsuit, you have one of two options: a) You can sit back and deal with it like a timid little tktkt or b) you can fire back and choose another public-facing channel to disseminate your information. Samsung chose the latter, opting to send its dismissed slides from its legal battle with Apple to the press, and drawing the ire of the judge overseeing the case. At the start of yesterday's opening arguments, Samsung's lawyer John Quinn argued that a slide containing phones designed prior to the iPhone unveiling—including the F700 phone—be counted as evidence. The judge then threatened to sanction the lawyer and that seemed like the end of it. But as the AllThingsD tells it, Samsung sent them the slides with the following message: The Judge's exclusion of evidence on independent creation meant that even though Apple was allowed to inaccurately argue to the jury that the F700 was an iPhone copy, ...

Apple's Patent Sketch for Its Own Retina-ized Version of Google Glasses is Awwwwwkward [Apple]

Image
Jul 27, 2012 12:40 PM   Apple has long been working on a Google Glasses-like heads up display, and have been granted a couple of patents already. But Patently Apple has drudged up their latest one, which promises to bring Retina-quality visuals to the little screen. And intriguing as that may be, the more entertaining thing here is the sketch itself. The look on the person's face. That boxy attachment for the screen. THE HELMET! All of it adds up to something quite ridiculous. Granted, this isn't a design patent, so whatever Apple is working on will look nothing like this. But for a company as obsessed with image as Apple is, one would have thought even their non-essential sketches would even look good. Apple Just Got a Patent for a Dimension that Doesn't Even Exist Yet [Patents]

Image
Jul 24, 2012 3:17 PM   Apple has just been granted a patent for 5D technology. Wait, what the hell? Has it traveled to the future and come back with something we don't know about yet? What advanced life forms are the suits in Cupertino communicating with? Turns out 5D is essentially an agressive marketing ploy for a patent that has gigantic range of applications for watching TV, gaming, and more. Like a Disneyland ride on steroids, the system Apple proposes harnesses gesture-controlled gaming in the style of Kinect or Wii, video-conferencing, and virtual reality gloves for what could be a super-immersive home entertainment experience. The gloves, as described, could change their resistances to electromagnetic forces, heat, or air, and more. The patent also covers tactile feedback technology—meaning the ability to start a futuristic car or signal a device through a handprint instead of any sort of key or button. And in Apple's version of our 5D future, touchscreens don't ...

Samsung: Apple Refused to Negotiate 3G Patent Licenses [Apple]

Image
Jul 23, 2012 8:00 AM   As another legal case between Apple and Samsung kicks off on Australia, it's come to light that Apple refused to enter into negotiations with Samsung over essential patent licenses for 3G technology included on the iPhone and iPad. The lawsuit is a complex one, including claims and counter-claims by Apple and Samsung over patents relating to touchscreen and 3G data transmission. But announcements in court today suggest that Samsung attempted to enter into negotiations with Apple in fair, reasonable and non-discriminatory (FRAND) terms—and Apple refused to cooperate. Though it's just another in a long list, it seems particularly poor form on Apple's part. Kodak Loses Patent Case to Apple and RIM

Image
Kodak has lost its patent case against Apple and RIM over technology for previewing digital images. The International Trade Commission (ITC) said it agreed with a judge’s ruling that stated neither Apple nor RIM violated Kodak’s patent for digital image previews. This loss could hurt the company — which filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in January — as it is hoping to sell its patents as a way to revive the company. Kodak originally filed its lawsuit against RIM and Apple back in January 2010. At the time, Kodak was attempting to get RIM and Apple to pay licensing fees for using technology it said it patented over the way digital images are previewed on a screen. Kodak was seeking over $1 billion from Apple alone. Apple countersued Kodak in April 2010, claiming that it actually invented the image preview technology Kodak claims to own. That case is still pending litigation in a separate lawsuit. As The New York Times notes, this case has dragged on for more than 30 months. The original...
