Aug 11, 2012 12:02 AM   The latest word out of the epic saga that is Apple vs. Samsung is that in October 2010, Samsung passed up on an offer from Apple to license certain of their patents for royalty rates: $30 per smartphone and $40 per tablet device. Additionally, Apple was willing to offer Samsung a 20% discount if they agreed to cross-license their own patents back to Apple. The Cupertino-based company had already begun to suspect Samsung of copying the design of its wildly popular iPhone, and said as much in an an August 2010 presentation. This latest testimony and evidence, released today, seems to make Samsung's case even bleaker than it had already begun to look. Below is Apple's October 2010 patents presentation to Samsung. Aug 7, 2012 4:40 PM   Apple has landed some more intellectual property for Passbook, its mobile wallet solution for iOS 6. This time it's a patent directly related to shopping. The latest is an NFC-powered shopping app that lets you make a list by scanning product codes or taking pictures. It will also pull up information you'd want to know like price, quality, ratings, etc. Then when you make your decision, you could check out electronically. Sounds a little obvious, and it actually seems similar to the Apple Store app that already exists. Except this one would work at every store. But just like the travel patent Apple recently earned, we won't see it as a standalone product, but rather another portion of Passbook. That's not a bad thing, though. With so many capabilities rolled in one, Passbook could be absolutely killer. Assuming, you know, the next iPhone actually has NFC. Aug 7, 2012 11:20 AM   Google has earned a patent for screen unlock that uses eye-tracking information, meaning when you finally get your hands on a pair of its augmented reality specs, you could access them with an eye roll. Just don't let your mom see you do that because she will be PISSED. Your eyes would follow a moving object, probably in some kind of pre-determined pattern, and then you'd be in. Look left. Look right. Now look up. Sounds like a trip to the optometrist's office. The patent applies to a wearable computing system, and though it doesn't explicitly say it's for Google Glasses, it's pretty obvious. And this gives us another small clue as to what the frames will actually do beyond the overhyped BMX/parachuter stunt we saw twice at I/O We'll see, just not until 2014. What advanced life forms are the suits in Cupertino communicating with? Turns out 5D is essentially an agressive marketing ploy for a patent that has gigantic range of applications for watching TV, gaming, and more. Like a Disneyland ride on steroids, the system Apple proposes harnesses gesture-controlled gaming in the style of Kinect or Wii, video-conferencing, and virtual reality gloves for what could be a super-immersive home entertainment experience. The gloves, as described, could change their resistances to electromagnetic forces, heat, or air, and more. The patent also covers tactile feedback technology—meaning the ability to start a futuristic car or signal a device through a handprint instead of any sort of key or button.
