Report: iOS 6 May Confirm Taller, 4-Inch iPhone [IOS 6]

Image
Aug 7, 2012 12:35 PM   Well this is interesting. iOS 6, pictured above on the left, is now able to scale to show five full lines of apps when displayed at 640x1136—the resolution a reported 4-inch iPhone would have. iOS 5.1, which is on the right, only shows four app rows when run in the same iOS simulator app. That's telling, since there would be little reason to add the support for an additional row if the screen was not going to get bigger. 9to5mac also reports that the simulator will not display the five rows at any resolution other than 640x1136, suggesting that Apple's not just trying to squish as many apps into the current screensize as it can. Other higher-than-current-iPhone resolutions scale iOS 6 to the iPad's home screen. This is just the latest evidence that we'll see a 4-inch iPhone. There is a phalanx of iPhone rumors cramming itself down our throats, and almost all of them point to a taller, 4-inch model with the aforementioned 640x1136 resolution. So!...

Report: Underage Children Abused in Samsung Factories [Child Abuse]

Image
A new report by a Chinese labor watchdog makes Apple's Foxconn woes look like a game of spin the bottle, Laptop Mag reports. Untreated injuries? Check. Dangerous workplace? Check. Hitting children and forcing them to stand? Check. This is bad. The report chronicles the inner workings of HEG Electronics, which manufactures gadgets on behalf of Samsung. Inside their factories? Kids under the age of 16, being worked like dogs until they bleed. See above. China Labor Watch says it was "stunned" by its contact with child workers and the findings of its investigators: Our research indicates that student laborers amount to 80% of the total workforce in the factory . During our follow up investigations, our investigators suspected that there were a large number of child laborers in other departments of the factory , estimating that there may be 50 to 100 children working there. These children were working under same harsh conditions as adult workers , but were paid only 70% of t...

Report: Apple iPhone and iPad Mini Announcement Will Be September 12 (Updated) [Apple]

Image
Jul 30, 2012 6:57 PM   iMore is reporting that Apple will announce the new iPhone and an iPad Mini on September 12, for release on the 21st. The relatively earlier-than-expected announcement would make some sense; Apple repeatedly cited next-generation iPhone rumors as being the reason iPhone 4S sales fell short last quarter, so the sooner a new product hits shelves the better. The basics are a stretched-out 4-inch screen and a smaller dock connector. But details about leaked components have ranged from smuggled phones to leaked parts to fully assembled units made from those parts. If those hold up, the next iPhone has been making the rounds for a while now. It should also be noted that iMore nailed the date on this year's iPad announcement almost a month ahead of time. The full announcement list will reportedly include the new iPhone, the iPad Mini, a new iPod Nano, and most likely the final version of iOS 6. iMore is also hearing that the iPad Mini is essentially a 7-point-some...

Al Golden, Staff Used Ex-Employee Sean Allen To Break Recruiting Rules, Report Claims

CORAL GABLES, Fla. — Miami coach Al Golden's second season at the school is beginning much like his first one, with new accusations of rule breaking, the looming threat of serious NCAA sanctions and no apparent end in sight for the long probe into the Hurricanes' compliance practices. Citing unidentified sources, Yahoo Sports reported Friday that former Miami football employee Sean Allen – who has been linked to one-time booster and now convicted Ponzi scheme architect Nevin Shapiro through the improper-benefits scandal that broke last year – assisted members of Golden's coaching staff with recruiting. If true, that could be a major NCAA violation by the troubled program, despite Golden's repeated insistence that he wants to "get it fixed." "The inferences and suggestions in the Yahoo Sports story that my conduct was anything but ethical are simply false." Golden also said that he has been a college football coach for more than 18 years and stands b...
