Google Shows Off Its Latest "Baby Steps" Toward Becoming the Star Trek Computer

Image
On Wednesday, Google announced new natural-language voice search on iOS, new, touch-friendly Web interfaces for its answers, and an ambitious, voluntary experiment to bring your Gmail messages into search results. Google wants to be like the Star Trek computer when it grows up, letting us ask questions naturally about anything and get a compelling answer right back. These new features show that Google's much further along than you might realize. Starting Thursday, users searching Google in English anywhere in the world will get Knowledge Graph results. Knowledge Graph, which launched in May, is Google's effort to move away from simple keyword matching and toward a natural-language understanding of terms and concepts. This week U.S. users will also start seeing Knowledge Graph people, place and thing suggestions in auto-suggest and auto-complete while typing their queries. Knowledge Graph boxes are displayed on the right side of search results and have a two-fold purpose: help...

Would Your Rather Wear a Computer on Your Face or Your Body? [Video]

Image
Aug 2, 2012 5:00 PM   When it comes to interacting with computers in unorthodox ways, Google Glasses are the first thing that come to mind. But it's not the only concept. There's also the computer which is integrated into our clothing. We've fitness and health concepts that can provide bio-feedback, and others which can control your MP3s. But what about a fully programmable shirt? Sure that concept is a bit show-offy and ridiculous, but what if you had a jacket that could display notifications on its sleeve? I'd much rather be seen wearing that instead of a pair of Google Glasses. What about you? These Malicious Tweets Want To Hijack Your Computer [Twitter]

Image
Jul 27, 2012 4:40 PM   If you tend to be click-happy, you better be careful on Twitter today. There's a malware epidemic going around and it seems to think it has your picture. The malicious tweets come in two varieties, both in the form of @ mentions. There are ones that ask "It's you on photo?" paired with a dangerous link, and also ones that ask the vaguer, but less grammatically jarring question "It's about you?" also with a link. Don't click; it's not about you. Both variations are particularly bad news because unlike normal Twitter spam which sends you off to some extremely sketchy Internet store or something, these links will load your computer up with the Blackhole exploit kit. Once the exploit is on your computer, it'll index all the vulnerabilities it can find in your browser plugins and the like, and then set you up with a customized set of malware just for you. It's not the first Twitter malware wave, and it certainly won...

Hidden Test Video Shows What Life in a Computer Factory Is Really Like [Video]

Image
Jul 27, 2012 1:20 PM   Have you ever wondered how your computer gets made? Ever thought about the people who put it together? What about how life is like inside a computer factory? This video, which was found inside a brand new HP laptop, answers all your questions. A Reddit user recently bought a HP laptop and found this test video inside the My Documents folder of a factory worker testing out the laptop's camera feature. The voyeuristic video shows a glimpse of the monotonous life inside: sitting, testing the same gear over and over, more sitting, more testing, etc. The conveyor belt of the same new gadget is endless. Supposedly, the video was taken in the Quanta Chongqing Manufacturing City in Chongqing. Props for the opera, factory guy. Is Google Chrome's Shockwave Plugin Making Your Computer Freak Out? [Chatroom]

Image
Jul 26, 2012 1:20 PM   If the issues with Gtalk and Twitter weren't already enough, we're having yet another issue over at Giz HQ. Shockwave is wreaking havoc on our Chrome browsers. Not that Shockwave hasn't already been a resource hog, but today is especially bad. Maybe it's a temporary incompatibility with OS X Mountain Lion or some other random issue that will (hopefully) be patched soon. But we're suffering. Anyone else—especially those of you on other platforms—notice any Shockwave issues in Chrome? This Innocent-Looking Power Strip Can Hack Almost Any Computer Network [Hacking]

Image
Jul 23, 2012 9:00 AM   What looks to the layman like a chunky under-the-desk computer power strip is actually a full-fledged hacking tool designed to let white hat hackers (aka the 'good' guys) test the security level of a given computer network, wired or wireless. With Wi-Fi, ethernet, Bluetooth, and an entire suite of hacking software tools built-in, the Power Pwn can let anyone put an office's computer network to the ultimate security test. And with an optional 3G/GSM adapter, they don't have to be anywhere near the facility being compromised. Not surprisingly, the development of the Power Pwn was partly funded by DARPA, which has a vested interest in protecting the government's networks, but with a pre-order price tag of almost $1,300, it might just push some non-government types into a life of hacking crime to afford it.
