Ingenious Chopsticks Never Touch the Table [Genius]

Image
Aug 2, 2012 11:40 AM   The gentle curve of the tines on a fork make spearing food a little easier, but also help to keep them from getting dirty when placed on a table. Which is an issue that has made chopstick rests a necessary accessory at many restaurants, at least until these brilliant Restless Chopsticks become more mainstream. Created by Mikiya Kobayashi, the chopsticks feature a clever angled design at the tip so when not in use the end that touches your food never comes into contact with the table. It's a brilliantly simple improvement to the chopstick design that unfortunately also seems easy to copy. So even though they're $15 a pair, it's probably best to buy the real deal to support the clever designer who came up with the idea—before ripoffs show up in every restaurant from here to Roppongi. You'll Never Want This Gorgeous Pizza Cutter To Touch Melted Cheese [Pizza]

Image
Jul 29, 2012 11:40 AM   On one hand there's no point in buying a gadget that's so lovely you'll be afraid to actually use it. But on the other hand, this pizza wheel from Rösle is absolutely gorgeous, and who on earth would want to ever muck up that polished finish by subjecting it to the greasy mess that is a pizza? Only monsters, that's who. Or people who don't have an appreciation for the art of kitchen accessory design. Because this wheel deserves a place on the wall at the MoMA. Or just hanging high above your kitchen counters where this $33 masterpiece can never be mucked up by food or greasy fingers. Hands-Free Toilet Paper Dispenser Is One Less Thing To Touch In Public Bathrooms [Video]

Image
Jul 23, 2012 10:20 AM   No one enjoys using a public restroom, but it's a necessary evil. And an evil that's made slightly more tolerable with Shikoku's new Camitool hands-free toilet paper dispenser that joins the ranks of faucets, soap dispensers, and hand dryers that never have to be touched. In addition to minimizing the spread of germs since you never have to touch the roll, the Camitool can dispense toilet paper in three specific lengths—from about 24 to 48 inches—which helps cut down on waste. An extra-sanitary plastic version is available now for $750, and is already in use in places like hospitals where cleanliness is most important. But a $1,200 wooden luxury version can also be custom ordered for home use. Now all that's left is to develop toilets, door handles, and bathroom floors we never have to touch. Artificial Finger Could Bring Touch To Robot Hands

Image
Researchers are developing a sense of touch, at least, a sense of touch for robotic machinery. A group of 13 researchers are working on an international project to develop an artificial finger with a sense of touch. The finger would be directly connected to the nervous system, the researchers said. It would contain sensors on its surface in the same numbers as our fingers do. The sensors translate pressure and mechanical movement into an electronic code. This would then decoded by the wearers brain, once they were trained to interpret the signals. "Compared to the hand prostheses which are currently on the market, an integrated sense of touch would be a major improvement. It would be a truly modern and biometric device which would give the patient the feeling as if it belonged to his own body," says Dr. Lucia Beccai from the Centre for Micro-Robotics at the Italian Institute for Technology. The finger would be important for people who have lost fingers or hands. The prototy...
