Aug 12, 2012 2:00 PM   Wikileaks, the Internet's top platform for exposing secrets of all varieties, is reporting that it's been under serious attack for the better part of a week. This extended DDoS is still coming in strong, and has brought the site to its knees. The DDoS traffic, which has reportedly been coming in at a rate of 10 gigabits per second, has effectively crippled the site, and raised all sorts of questions as to who might be behind it. While Wikileaks has no shortage of enemies, it recently published a number of classified U.S. documents detailing what may be a huge, secret surveillance project. Conveninetly enough, the DDoS attack has rendered the documents in question largely unavailable, a fact you can attribute to either coincidence or conspiracy depending on the way your mind works. Apparently so, for inmates in the District of Columbia Department of Corrections. The department's installed 108 video units, split between its jails and a Video Visitation Center at the District of Columbia General Hospital. That seems like a net positive on the surface, but it's actually a contentious topic: The District of Columbia made the switch on July 25 to video visitation, a growing trend in the corrections field. To proponents, the video systems provide a more convenient, safer, thriftier alternative to in-person visits. Some jurisdictions even make money, by charging for the video visits. Jul 22, 2012 3:30 PM   Reddit user Philawesomeraptor's girlfriend recently received a cornea transplant for a condition called keratoconus, which causes structural changes to the cornea, and drastically distorts vision. These are her stitches. There are other images of cornea stitches out there, but this one is especially beautiful. Apparently she is doing well, and her vision is improving in the eye that was operated on, so good news all around.
