Aug 12, 2012 1:00 PM   Theoretically, you can use a laptop without plugging anything into it, but if you're using your trusty lappy at a desk, it's pretty easy to go peripheral-crazy. I'm almost always rocking a mouse, laptop charging cable, and charging cable for my phone, and sometimes even a external keyboard. I know you Apple kids skew a bit more minimalist though. So whatcha rockin'? And for all of you using desktops, I haven't forgotten about you; I just don't value your input. Just kidding. Sort of. Aug 12, 2012 7:00 PM   After endless back and forth between Apple and Samsung attorneys over what the jury should and shouldn't be told, U.S. District Judge Lucy Koh has gotten fed up and ordered them to meet face to face and start hashing things out. For real. Up until now, each company has been blaming the other for impeding the process of meeting and coming to some kind of agreement regarding joint jury instructions. Now Judge Koh's order will force them to sit down, shut up, stop pointing fingers, and get this thing done. According to Foss Patents, the order reads as follows: "The Court is disappointed by the parties' respective reports regarding their meet and confer efforts on final jury instructions. Lead trial counsel shall meet and confer in person today and file joint and disputed final jury instructions by Monday, August 13, 2012 at 8 a.m." We'll have to wait and see if this straightens anything out. Both parties seem pretty intent on squabbling....

Aug 8, 2012 4:00 PM   WINNER: Uh Oh Canon EOS 1000D, 50mm, f1.8, 1/10, ISO 400. Set the camera on a tripod with a locking shutter release, locked it just did a little shadowboxing at the camera. Took about 200 shots to get the focus and blur just right. Post-process using Nik filters to get that Street Fighter IV-ish look. I figured this week's challenge fit perfectly for another hobby of mine; boxing. Blinking is a dangerous thing to do when you're in punching range of your opponent. But it's also one that could happen to anyone, at any time. So we put together a list of the best ways to make sure your internet self—your accounts, your cash, and your information—stays secure. Password strength is vital to your frontline defense. Obviously your password should be a combination of letters and numbers, but don't stop at the bare minimum. Use uppercase letters in random spots. Subsitute numbers for letters. Mash multiple word phrases together. Deliberately misspell those words. Space them out. Aug 1, 2012 7:00 PM   From the players to the coaches to the administrators to the boosters, University of Miami football in the '90s was dirty, underhanded, morally and ethically suspect. It was also the best. But unlike the other schools which almost certainly went out of their way to project a squeaky clean image, the U was downright unapologetic for its on-field antics. And you know what? That shit was entertaining. Part of ESPN's 30 for 30 documentary series (all of which are now on Netflix!), The U presents a very candid look at the school's golden era, told mainly though the laundry list of former players, many of whom went on to become NFL stars. Big hits, trash talk, money, drugs, gold and girls are all figure in to the downfall of The U, which is now a shell of its former self (probably for the better). It's not awesome, since it's only free because the piracy rate for the Android version is "unbelievably high." Ugh. It's just one example, but it's a problem that's endemic to the platform—or at least seen that way. There are a lot of things keeping developers from succeeding on, or even wading into the Android platform. Fragmentation doesn't help. But developers having to just give up charging for their game—which was only a buck!—because everyone's pirating it has to have a lot to do with it. And look, we've given you plenty of advice about how to pirate. But in general, you want to limit those habits to things you actually own, and are being inconvenienced out of, by DRM or format or whatnot. Not every app on your mobile platform.
