Whoaaaa, Here's the Largest 3D Map of the Universe Ever [Video]

Image
Aug 9, 2012 11:40 AM   New Mexico's Apache Point Observatory has used its giant telescope to create the biggest 3D tour of the universe ever, starring 400,000 galaxies. Ohhhh, ahhhh! The amazing map was put together using data from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey, an ambitious project that's been working for the past 12 years to chart 7 billion years' worth of planetary activity. Take a minute because that might make your brain explode. The video is made from two years of SDSS info, but wait—there's more. It still has more than a million galaxies to go before it maps the whole thing. The universe is a huuuuge place. And we are tiny. The Largest Mirror In the World Is So Big That You Can See It From Space [Image Cache]

Jul 27, 2012 4:42 PM   This is the Salar de Uyuni, the largest salt flatland in the world at 4,086 square miles (10,582 kilometers). Every year, this amazing wonderland in southwest Bolivia covers with a thin layer of water. When that happens, it turns into the largest mirror on the planet, as these photos recently taken by Takaki Watanabe show. The resulting landscape is absolutely surreal, out of a Salvador Dalí painting. I want to go there—¡pronto! The salar is formed by several preshistoric lakes, which started to transform 30,000 to 42,000 years ago. Covered by several feet of salt, the Salar de Uyuni stays dry most of the year except a few days, when it rains and turns into this wonder. And while it looks like it must be hell on Earth, it's not hot at all: its temperatures range from a low 55 degrees Fahrenheit (13º C) to 70º F (21º F). But the most surreal part is the fact that is a major breeding ground for pink flamingos . Can you imagine a flock of thousands of flamingo...

The World's Largest Lollipop Weighs 3.5 Tons [Food]

Jul 24, 2012 10:00 PM   See's Candies celebrated National Lollipop Day (which is apparently a thing) on July 20th by unveiling its record-breaking confection—a 7,003-pound version of the company's signature Gourmet Lollipop—in San Francisco's Justin Herman Plaza. The gargantu-lolli measured a whopping 4-foot, 8 3/4-inches in length, 3-foot 6-inches in width, and 5-foot 11-inches in height. It's mounted on a nearly 12-foot stick and, even though the stick didn't count towards the final weight, the lollipop still broke the previous record set in 2009 by nearly 500 pounds. If you're headed to the Giants-Dodgers game on Sunday the 29th, you are in for a treat! The record setting candy will be on display at the ballpark during the game.
