Ingenious Chopsticks Never Touch the Table [Genius]

Image
Aug 2, 2012 11:40 AM   The gentle curve of the tines on a fork make spearing food a little easier, but also help to keep them from getting dirty when placed on a table. Which is an issue that has made chopstick rests a necessary accessory at many restaurants, at least until these brilliant Restless Chopsticks become more mainstream. Created by Mikiya Kobayashi, the chopsticks feature a clever angled design at the tip so when not in use the end that touches your food never comes into contact with the table. It's a brilliantly simple improvement to the chopstick design that unfortunately also seems easy to copy. So even though they're $15 a pair, it's probably best to buy the real deal to support the clever designer who came up with the idea—before ripoffs show up in every restaurant from here to Roppongi. We've Been Eating Ketchup Wrong This Whole Time [Genius]

Image
Aug 1, 2012 4:40 PM   You thought those small condiment cups you get at fast food restaurants only held a thimble's worth of ketchup, right? You were wrong. Horribly, brutally wrong. Turns out you can fan them out, meaning you can dunk your fries by the fistful into a sea of crimson tomato deliciousness. Consider your life forever changed. Maybe you've been doing this forever already, but a quick poll of Giz staffers found that we were overwhelmingly overwhelmed with this revelation. More cup real estate means more ketchup. More ketchup means a face covered in crimson like you just stuck your face under a soft drink fountain of Heinz. More ketchup means no fast food fare left naked. It's not supposed to be clean. Dave Thomas (R.I.P.) isn't setting out the white napkins for your trip to Wendy's. Expanding cups are there so your juicy beef patty is soaked in the sauce, your fingers dyed red, and your face dripping in viscous liquid. Don't be shy. Smash your sand...

Charles Darwin Hacked Together His Own Office Chair Because He Was a Genius [Past Perfect]

Image
Jul 27, 2012 11:00 PM   If you're reading this post there's a pretty good chance you're doing so on a computer. You're probably sitting in a wonderfully ergonomic office chair too. We have Charles Darwin to thank for the latter—sort of. Darwin was a notorious workaholic. Though he spent many years gallivanting around the world collecting specimens, at some point he had to sit down and actually study them. Office chairs hadn't been invented yet, so Darwin slapped some wheels on the to feet of his chair so he could work faster. It's basically an armchair on wheels which isn't what we're used to, but it was ahead of its time. It took people a long time to accept Decent of Man , too. The office chair actually went into mass production long before Darwin's ideas were widely embraced. But we have industrialization to thank for its advent. With the rise of the clerical worker in the second half of the 19th century, office chairs were adopted to facilitate...
