Aug 11, 2012 9:00 AM   The hardest part of reading (besides the big, scary words) is finding a remotely comfortable way to sit, or lie, while doing it. These crazy prism glasses will add "lying on your back" to the list of options, but you'll look stupid. It's a simple concept. The prism glasses redirect your line of sight nintey degrees downward, parallel to your supine form. That way you can, in theory, prop your book or magazine on your chest or stomach, and still read it without doing crunches to tilt your head. Seems equally useful and disorienting. Probably not the best setup for reading Pynchon or something. If you want to try this elegant yet weird solution a try, you can pick up a pair of these guys for about $25. Aug 7, 2012 11:20 AM   Google has earned a patent for screen unlock that uses eye-tracking information, meaning when you finally get your hands on a pair of its augmented reality specs, you could access them with an eye roll. Just don't let your mom see you do that because she will be PISSED. Your eyes would follow a moving object, probably in some kind of pre-determined pattern, and then you'd be in. Look left. Look right. Now look up. Sounds like a trip to the optometrist's office. The patent applies to a wearable computing system, and though it doesn't explicitly say it's for Google Glasses, it's pretty obvious. And this gives us another small clue as to what the frames will actually do beyond the overhyped BMX/parachuter stunt we saw twice at I/O We'll see, just not until 2014. Aug 1, 2012 3:20 PM   Peter Jackson's decision to shoot The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey at 48 fps and in 3D raised a lot of eyebrows among Lord Of the Rings fans. But not the Tolkien marketing machine who saw an opportunity to cook up these tacky Hobbit-themed 3D glasses for the film's release. But while most moviegoers will probably opt for the 2D experience, there will most certainly be some extremely loyal fanboys who demand to see the film in every dimension possible. And it's that group that will certainly snatch up these limited edition RealD-approved glasses. They're made of plastic, of course, but designed to look like they're actually crafted from hammer forged steel—an effect that's not going to fool anyone in the theater. Jul 27, 2012 5:30 AM   Google's glasses were a little bit of a let down for those of us who wanted a true head-up display. This video, however, depicts a fictional future where the head-up display powers all our digital lives—and it's equal parts awesome and terrifying. Called Sight, this short was put together by Eran May-raz and Daniel Lazo, as a graduation project at Bezaleal academy of arts. It shows off a world where the only display required is embedded in a contact lens—which makes an empty room a playground and every activity a game. It's a thought-provoking little video and, given the way things turn out, maybe we should be thankful that Google Glasses don't offer true HUD just yet. But Patently Apple has drudged up their latest one, which promises to bring Retina-quality visuals to the little screen. And intriguing as that may be, the more entertaining thing here is the sketch itself. The look on the person's face. That boxy attachment for the screen. THE HELMET! All of it adds up to something quite ridiculous. Granted, this isn't a design patent, so whatever Apple is working on will look nothing like this. But for a company as obsessed with image as Apple is, one would have thought even their non-essential sketches would even look good.
