Why Lenovo Believes in Windows 8 Tablets - Even if Acer Doesn’t

Image
Just hours after Acer’s CEO complained that Microsoft’s Surface tablet would generate a “negative impact” on the tablet market, Lenovo announced its own entrant to the Surface market, the ThinkPad Tablet 2. Clearly, Lenovo sees a market for a Windows 8 tablet that Acer does not. But what? Business users, most likely. “It appears the Lenovo is targeting business users and is shipping with an Intel processor,” Michael Gartenberg, a mobile analyst with Gartner, noted. “It’s also worth noting the digitizer is an extra add on.” In fact, the digitizer - the optional digital pen that Microsoft will support with Windows 8, and Lenovo has chosen to include as an option for the Tablet 2 - is just one of a number of differentiating features that separate the Tablet 2 from Microsoft’s Surface. Campbell Kan, Acer’s president for personal computer global operations, helped open the debate this week by telling the Financial Times that it is considering alternatives to Windows 8. “If Microsoft… is g...

When and Where Will Windows 8 Matter For PC and Tablet Users?

Image
Postponing operating system upgrades until the last possible moment, and even forestalling new PC purchases, is common among Windows veterans. Only recently has the ancient Windows XP lost its position as the most popular version of Microsoft's operating system. This attitude enabled many of us to skip over Windows Me and Vista, and there are signs that Windows 8 may get ignored in the same way. A close look at four everyday test cases for computer and tablet users reveals if that approach makes sense. Wednesday, in How Much Will Windows 8 Matter to You, we raised the sticky and sometimes treacherous subject of moving to Windows 8. The next step is to examine common use case scenarios - four distinct places in everyday computing environments - to help ascertain when moving to Windows 8 might make sense for you. It could be October 26, the official release date. It probably won't be never. The productive work you do at home may involve Microsoft Office. If it doesn't, then...

Windows 8 Just Leaked [Piracy]

Image
Aug 2, 2012 5:52 PM   We're not saying anyone should pirate Windows 8, because it's against American legal code and universal moral law, but if you wanted to, it's out there for the downloading. Illegally. It won't officially hit developers until the 15th of this month, at which point it'll be pirated even more rampantly, but if you want to start now—which you shouldn't because it's illegal!—you could, technically, illegally. Which you ought not to. Leaked Lenovo Windows 8 Tablet Could Also Hint at What's Inside Surface [Rumors]

Image
Aug 1, 2012 10:22 AM   Microsoft Surface is one of the most exciting products we've heard about in a long time, but for everything the company did to whet our appetite, it left us with plenty of questions about the tablet's guts, too. Tech In 5 has obtained what appear to be leaked slides detailing the forthcoming Lenovo "Windows 8 ThinkPad Tabet 2." Could this be our first look at what Surface and its competition will look like inside? Even though Lenovo goes to pains to compare the Windows 8 ThinkPad Tablet to an iPad, its real competition will be Microsoft Surface. In particular, it's interesting to hear about the tablet's chipset. It packs an Intel Cloverview Dual Core Atom processor. Atom processors are notorious battery killers, but Lenovo seems to think that it can get 10 hours out of the tablet. What else? The 10.1-inch tablet is 9.8mm thick (slightly more than the 9.3mm Surface) and weighs 24 ounces (the same). The screen has 1366 x 768 resolution, ...

New Leaked Screenshots Make Windows 8 Metro Look Even Better [Windows 8]

Image
Jul 22, 2012 12:00 PM   WinUnleaked has some new leaked screenshots from Microsoft's Windows 8 RTM (Release to Manufacturers) build that show how the new OS will look. From the look of them, Microsoft is making an effort to make Metro work as a unifying design across all of Windows 8. The big difference is that IE10 now changes its color to coordinate itself with the color scheme of Windows 8. It seems reasonable to guess that other apps will eventually get similar treatment, since Microsoft also made the color scheme the same for window borders and the taskbar. The only ugly bit is the new boot screen, with that hideous Windows 8 logo on black: For other details, like a look at some of the new wallpapers, head over to WinUnleaked.
