10 Surprising Uses for WD-40 (and 5 Places It Should Never Be Sprayed) [Home Mod]

Image
Everybody knows WD-40 is the go-to product for silencing squeaks, displacing moisture, preventing rust, and loosening stuck parts. You probably have a can sitting in your garage right now. It has a ton of uses, but it's no panacea. In fact, there are a some jobs that the lube will absolutely ruin. Your house is the biggest gadget of all. A Gizmodo Home Mod shows you how to recharge it, clear its cache, and update its operating systems. 1. Lube a shovel. Spray WD-40 on a shovel, spading fork, hoe or garden trowel. The soil slides right off—especially helpful when digging in clay. 2. Clean tile. The spray removes spilled mascara, nail polish, paint and scuff marks from tile floors, and also help you wipe away grime from the grout lines. Clean up with soapy water. 3. Scrub stains from stainless steel sinks. 4. Unstick gum. A squirt makes it easier to pull gum out of carpet and even hair. It's better than cutting out the gum and leaving patchy carpet or a bad haircut. 5. Soften...

Ingenious Chopsticks Never Touch the Table [Genius]

Image
Aug 2, 2012 11:40 AM   The gentle curve of the tines on a fork make spearing food a little easier, but also help to keep them from getting dirty when placed on a table. Which is an issue that has made chopstick rests a necessary accessory at many restaurants, at least until these brilliant Restless Chopsticks become more mainstream. Created by Mikiya Kobayashi, the chopsticks feature a clever angled design at the tip so when not in use the end that touches your food never comes into contact with the table. It's a brilliantly simple improvement to the chopstick design that unfortunately also seems easy to copy. So even though they're $15 a pair, it's probably best to buy the real deal to support the clever designer who came up with the idea—before ripoffs show up in every restaurant from here to Roppongi. You'll Never Want This Gorgeous Pizza Cutter To Touch Melted Cheese [Pizza]

Image
Jul 29, 2012 11:40 AM   On one hand there's no point in buying a gadget that's so lovely you'll be afraid to actually use it. But on the other hand, this pizza wheel from Rösle is absolutely gorgeous, and who on earth would want to ever muck up that polished finish by subjecting it to the greasy mess that is a pizza? Only monsters, that's who. Or people who don't have an appreciation for the art of kitchen accessory design. Because this wheel deserves a place on the wall at the MoMA. Or just hanging high above your kitchen counters where this $33 masterpiece can never be mucked up by food or greasy fingers. Google Never Actually Deleted That Street View Breach Data [Google]

Image
Back in 2010, Google caught a bit of flak when a "rogue engineer" used Street View cars to harvest personal Wi-Fi data. Now it's poised to catch some more; Authorities in the UK found Google's been holding onto some of it for the past two years. When the data snooping came to light back in 2010, Street View cars had already been extracting private information from insecure personal Wi-Fi networks approximately three years. According to Google, it all happened under the radar, and as soon as it found out about, it fessed up, apologized, and promised to delete all the questionable data. Turns out it didn't. The news came out when the UK Information Commissioner's Office published a statement saying that: Google contacted the ICO to confirm that it still had in its possession some of the payload data collected by its Street View vehicles prior to May 2010... Google indicated that they wanted to delete the remaining data and asked for the ICO's instructions ...

The MC-27J Spartan: The Baddest Gunship the USAF Will Never Fly [Monster Machines]

Image
After a decade of deployment in Afghanistan and Iraq, the wings are literally falling off the USAF's aging fleet of AC-130s. The Air Force thought about upgrading them to the new MC-27J Spartan multi-purpose gunship—but budget cuts nixed that idea. The Airmen will miss out on quite a machine. The Spartan is a 60-troop multipurpose cargo plane, developed by Italy's Alenia Aermacchi over the last year, and very similar in design to the C-27A currently in service. It is primarily a tactical cargo plane, popular among the special forces for its ability to take off on short runways, fast transfer speed, and 3,200 NMI range. But the MC-27J also features a RO/RO (roll on/roll off), pallet-based option system that allows it to be employed on a variety of missions. Like choosing the the Luxury versus Sport package on a 5-series BMW, the Spartan can be modified to suit a particular mission type. Unlike the 5-Series, however, the RO/RO system allows the Spartan to change between various ...

ChargeCard Means You’ll Never Again Be Stranded With a Dead iPhone [VIDEO]

For all of us who have forgotten our chargers, here’s a great solution: ChargeCard, a rigid USB/iPhone charging cable that’s the size of a credit card.
