How Craig Newmark Went from Craigslist Creator to Internet Do-Gooder [What Was It]

Image
Craigstlist: it's the place we find apartments, pets, and love connections. Started by its namesake, Craig Newmark, in 1995 as an emailed newsletter circulated among friends, it's grown to become the proxy classifieds page for people all over the world. Craig isn't running things there anymore, but he's still very much involved in the company. On top of that, he does a lot of non-profit work with his organization craigconnects, and sits on the board of several other organizations like the Center for Public Integrity, the Sunlight Foundation, and the Iraq and Afghanistan Veterans of America. Here's how he went from internet pioneer to charity machine: Gizmodo: As a kid, were you always interested in technology? Craig: Yup, I fulfilled the whole nerd stereotype. In third grade, I wanted to be a paleontologist, few years later, decided to try physics. Gizmodo: Where did the idea for craigslist come from? Did you ever think it would get so big? Craig: The seminal id...

Guy Orders TV from Amazon, Gets Giant Assault Rifle Instead [Guns On The Internet]

Image
Aug 8, 2012 3:01 PM   Talk about a dealzmodo! DC resident Seth Horvitz bought a new HDTV on Amazon, but when he opened the peculiarly not-TV-shaped box, he found a $2,000 Sig Sauer SIG716 semi-automatic rifle instead, DCist reports. A mistake has been made. Assault rifles are completely illegal in Washington, but that didn't stop the accidental delivery. Transporting a weapon into DC is also completely illegal. Apparently, the third party Amazon seller who shipped out the 37-inch, 7.62 X 51 mm NATO caliber rifle intended it to hit a gun dealer in Pennsylvania. Not some guy in DC. Cops confiscated the gun and got it the hell out of there, so things turned out okay—but what if this weapon, described by Sig Sauer as "the rifle of choice when you require the power of a larger caliber carbine," had been mailed to a kid? Or, you know, a criminal? It's easy enough to buy a gun online—now they're just showing up at your door for no reason. [DCist] View the original art...

Is This the Best or the Most Evil Parenting Trick Ever? [Internet]

Image
Jul 30, 2012 1:20 PM   I don't know who had the genius idea—and courage—to stick this post-it on their fridge door but, as evil as it may seem for kids all around the world, it's the best parenting tip I've ever seen on this age of underage internet junkies. You may think it's the evilest, though. Discuss. Guns on the Internet, OS X Mountain Lion, Fast Food Follies, Buckyball Bans, and More... [Video]

Image
Yes the Olympics started this week, but that doesn't mean the world of tech decided to shut down. A lot happened! Whether it was the release of Mountain Lion, the banning of Buckyballs magnets, Canon's new Mirrorless camera, or bad social media strategies from fast food chains, you have a lot to catch up on. Read up below. This is the Salar de Uyuni, the largest salt flatland in the world at 4,086 square miles (10,582 kilometers). Every year, this amazing wonderland in southwest Bolivia covers with a thin layer of water. When that happens, it turns into the largest mirror on the planet, as these photos recently taken by Takaki Watanabe show. It looks like the white 3D prototype we published a while back-complete with its new 19-pin dock port. But could this really be a unit smuggled out of Foxconn's factory? Google's Crazy 1000Mbps Fiber Internet Connection Is Out Today [Video]

Image
Google's unbelievably fast new 1000Mbps fiber is finally live in Kansas City today. The service has no bandwidth cap, no overage fees, and it'll come with 1TB (!!) of free cloud storage. In addition to the blazing broader than broadband internet, Google's also got a new TV service called Google Fiber Television. The service is a lot like Google TV, but cleaner, and it can record up to 500 hours of HD programs. There will be remote apps for iOS and Android, both of which will have voice control, and at some point they'll get video streaming as well. The TV package will have all broadcast networks, along with hundreds of "Fiber channels". Oh, and the default remote? A Nexus 7. Which you get for free when you sign up for a TV package. There is a $300 construction fee for installing the fiber at your house, though. But Google is waiving that fee for new customers at the start. The internet and TV package, along with the 1TB of storage, is $120 per month. An inte...

Buying a Ton of Guns on the Internet Is Cheap, Legal, and Shockingly Easy [Video]

Image
If you're a terrorist, a guerrilla, or are aspiring toward either, The Armory might be your gun depot of choice. But for anyone not on the government's radar, 100-percent legal, open websites are all you need to plan an American massacre. This is a little scary. It doesn't appear James Holmes broke any laws of the US or Colorado until he allegedly opened fire in that crowded theater. Up until that point, he was just another guy accumulating multiple firearms, bullet-maximizing accessories, and thousands upon thousands of bullets. All it took to create a cache of weapons capable of mass murder was time, money, and Internet savvy—three things most Americans have at least some of. With only Google and a few nouns, you can find everything you need to kill lots of people. "buy bulk ammo" "100-round magazine" "body armor" Plug these searches in, and a bevy of eager online merchants will ring you up. Unlike The Armory, there's no need for encrypt...

The Internet Was Really Shitty Today (But I Still Love It) [Rant]

Image
What the hell happened to the Internet today? Google Talk? Down. Twitter? Crashed. Messages? Completely awful. Chrome? Blowing up my laptop. The weather? Shitty. My hangover? Slight but smelly. That all made me very grumpy. Did the entire internet decide to shit the bed on Thursday July 26th 2012? Did it think we wouldn't notice? How come we never got the memo? Well, go to hell Internet, we don't need you! Wait no sorry. That's a lie. We need you. Badly. It's sort of sad, really, how connected we are. Sad that it makes us so happy. I woke up in the morning like I always do, wanting to go right back to sleep. But like any self respecting kid in adult-sized clothing trying to avoid being exposed as a no-talent hack, you power on, dropping GIF bombs to your snickering co-workers and hearing stories about who humped who on hump day over Gchat. It's a morning routine as normal as sipping hot water that ran through roasted beans. But today? Ugh. How did the internet expe...

How To Use the Internet to Water Your Plants [Home Mod]

Image
Keeping a garden lush all summer is a lot of work. You're traveling. You're busy. It's hot out there. But technology offers the equivalent of a remote control watering can that you control from the couch. Here's how to wire up your yard to keep it thriving when you can't get out back to do it yourself. Irrigation at the most base level is just a series of tubes. They're channels and pipes that carry water from one location to another. To automate their performance, the key is controlling the valves. Being the 21st century and all, water valves have evolved beyond the lefty-loosey-righty-tighty hand-turned models that populate most yards. The inclusion of a 24-volt actuator means that the automatic in-line valve offerings from companies like RainBird, Orbit , or Toro will open and close themselves when a charge is applied. These, however, are designed to work with only basic timer systems. They don't think for themselves. To do that, you need a control modul...

Comcast reportedly prepping 305Mbps internet service, aims to put FiOS in its place

Image
By Sean Buckley posted Jul 20th 2012 5:23AM Sure, at 300Mbps Verizon's FiOS Quantum is lightning fast -- but reports say that Comcast is prepping a new tier that's just a little faster. According to Broadband Reports sources, Comcast's Neil Smit told employees that the company would be introducing a 305Mbps downstream tier in Verizon FiOS territories "soon," but neglected to mention a strict timetable. Details regarding pricing and data caps are similarly scarce, of course. Comcast has yet to comment on the rumor, but we'll let you know if we hear anything official.
